Magyar Nemzet

was a Hungarian newspaper.

As part of the project »Fonts for Freedom« by Reportes without Borders, we reconstructed typefaces out of the titles of forbidden newspapers. The campaign, conceived by Serviceplan, symbolically turns the fonts into ambassadors for press freedom.

Magyar Nemzet is a bold and very compressed display typeface that can be classified as Didone. It comprises both uppercase and lowercase letters to form statements in German, English and Hungarian language.

The Hungarian newspaper Magyar Nemzet was founded in 1938 and became the voice of the civic anti-communists. Today after the break between Orbán and the owner of the newspaper, Magyar Nemzet became more critical of government. It was the last supra-regional daily newspaper which was not controlled by the government or Orbán intimates when it closed down for financial reasons in April 2018.
